The Tennessee Titans has partnered with the Nashville LGBT Chamber to release a statement urging the General Assembly and Senate to reject multiple homophobic and transphobic pieces of legislation currently being considered this week. The bills include banning same sex couples from fostering children, requiring the state to defend schools that would mandate which bathroom trans youth can use, another anti-trans bathroom bill and a bill to undermine anti-discrimination ordinances in cities and towns.
The package of bills, labeled as “Tennessee’s Slate of Hate” has drawn a lot of criticism as activists fight against their passage. The Tennessee Titans released their statement condemning the bills.
“The Tennessee Titans oppose discrimination in any form. We are long-standing supporters of Tennessee Thrives. Discriminatory legislation hurts all of us. It also impacts our ability to secure events like the 2019 NFL Draft, major conventions, major athletic contests and other events that benefit our local and state economy. It also weakens our ability to recruit new business and industry to Nashville and to Tennessee. We would encourage our elected officials to keep us on a path that protects all our citizens, our growth and our economy.”
In addition, the Titans joined with other major companies that do business in Tennessee, including Amazon, Dell, and Warner Music, which criticized the anti-LGBTQI bills. Let’s hope that the Tennessee state legislature gets the message.
