A proposal introduced by Republican Representative Nancy Barto and co-sponsored by 22 other Republicans seeks to ban transgender women and girls from participating in sports in the gender division that aligns with their gender identity.
The bill is yet another anti-trans bill, from over a dozen introduced in states all over the United States that seeks to oppress trans people in various forms. The Arizona bill would limit participation in sports on female teams to biological women or girls and would require a doctor’s note to prove that they are female if the birth sex is disputed. Additionally, it would allow students to sue if they believe they missed an opportunity due to a transgender athlete.
Barto stated that the measure is “intended to prevent female athletes from being forced to compete against biological males” and that the law would apply to all K-12 schools, community colleges and state universities. Barto argues in regard to basic fairness, in a statement she shared,
“When this is allowed, it discourages female participation in athletics and, worse, it can result in women and girls being denied crucial educational and financial opportunities,” Barto’s statement said.
Since Republicans hold the majority in the Arizona State House and is backed by conservative so called “religious-freedom” groups, Alliance Defending Freedom and the Center for Arizona Policy to lobby and push the proposal.
