Rick Welts, President of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors officially tied the knot with his longtime partner, Todd Gage on Friday. In a ceremony officiated by the mayor of San Francisco, the two said “I do” and sealed the deal with a kiss. In a tweet, Welts said “it was a good day, nine years in the making!”

Welts came out to the public in 2011 when he was president of the Phoenix Suns. The story was published in the New York Times and Welts became the first senior sports executive in any professional sports league to come out as gay. Welts chose to come out publicly after confiding with family and friends, he hoped that his coming out would build awareness and conversation on the topic and has reported that he never felt any hostility as a gay man from his colleagues in the NBA.

Having worked with the Golden State Warriors for nine years now, Welts helped guide the team to five consecutive NBA finals and three NBA Championships. After sharing his wedding photos on Twitter, Welts and Gage received many kind messages and congratulations from the community all over.
