The Olympic Trials and national team selections for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics are underway and the torch is making its’ way to Korea. Nothing quite gets you in the mood like some awesome movies about the Winter Olympics, check these out!
A classic movie, retelling the story of famous “Miracle on Ice” hockey game that took place during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid where the ultimate underdog team of college kids representing Team USA took on the dominant and heavily favored gold medal team representing the U.S.S.R. in one of the most watched events in Olympic history. Personally, this movie ALWAYS gives me the feels!
What millennial in the United States didn’t grow up watching Cool Runnings? While the movie isn’t exactly a 100% true story. It does take a lot of inspiration from the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary where a team of track sprinters in Jamaica traded their shorts for skin suits and jumped in a bobsled to become the first team from Jamaica to represent at the Winter Olympics.
Eddie The Eagle
It seems like the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary was where it all happened! Eddie Edwards (nicknamed, “The Eagle”) was the first athlete to represent Team GB in the sport of Ski Jumping at the Winter Olympics. Despite having no knowledge or experience at the sport, he went on to compete in both the 70m and 90m events. Be sure to watch this movie on a cold night, Hugh Jackman is in it and is sure to warm you right up!
While a completely fictional story, this fabulous Rom-Com plays on a hot/cold dynamic in pairing a bratty, snooty figure skater with a hockey player who otherwise can’t give a shit. They both want to compete at the Olympics but realize that despite their distaste for each other, they need each other to make it to the games. While predictable (spoiler alert! They kiss!) It is quite a cute movie to watch.
And last but not least…
Again, who grew up in the 90s and wasn’t aware of the infamous Tonya Harding/ Nancy Kerrigan scandal? Despite the shock of the whole “incident” USA Figure Skating can thank Tonya Harding for the sudden and extreme interest in the sport that put figure skating in almost every home in the world. In fact, many records were broken by people who tuned in to watch Figure Skating at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. However not many people really know much about Tonya as a person and this movie certainly sheds a lot of light. Packed full of drama (and we gays LOVE our drama) and be prepared for not the happiest ending in a movie (it certainly is no Cutting Edge). I, Tonya is full of quite a dark but fun humor in addition the story is certain to open your mind about the infamous “Incident” and more that you might learn that there is a lot more behind one of the most famous (or infamous) Olympic stories.
