The Gay Polo League is thrilled to be the recipient of the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Champion of Equity & Diversity in Sports Award. “The value of embracing, celebrating, and evaluating diversity is beyond measure. Differences are our teachers,” said GPL founder and president Chip McKenney. “The advancement of equity is forever ongoing,” he continued. “Thank you to the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame for this award–it is a reflection of all the people who have contributed to GPL’s evolution and growth as an agent of change. Receiving this award lets us know that we are changing the sport of polo one chukker at a time.”
The 45th annual Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame awards ceremony will take place on April 3, 2022 at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. Among the inductees is equestrian legend Laura Kraut. The Gay Polo League is only the second polo entity to be recognized by the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame since its inception in 1977–the other is Jeff Blake, a professional polo player.
“Polo has a big presence in the Palm Beach area, so we are delighted to be part of what makes the community special,” said McKenney.
The Palm Beach Sports Hall of Fame was started by sports writer Chuck Otterson. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission got involved in 2004 and helped make the organization what it is today.
