It’s been a little over six months since the 2018 Gay Games in Paris concluded and the host of the next Gay Games in 2022 is already well underway in planning and preparing for the edition of the world’s largest, international, multi-sport event. One of the biggest challenges that organizers of Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 faces is building an LGBT sports community in a country that has traditionally had very low, if any, participation at previous Gay Games and other LGBTI oriented sports events.
But that’s a challenge that the Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 team is taking on with no shortage of enthusiasm. Their efforts call back to the humble beginnings of the Gay Games movement in San Francisco which faced the same kind of issue of building an entire community where none had previously existed. The Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 team however, does have the benefit of the Federation of the Gay Games’ 40 years of experience to help them out.
In one of their first big events, the Gay Games Hong Kong 2022 team is hosting a town hall event, dubbed ‘Milestone 2019; Sports as Empowerment’ which will featured panel discussions and guests sharing their stories and experiences at previous Gay Games. The panel will include local athletes from Hong Kong who attended the 2018 Gay Games in Paris as well as members of the Federation of the Gay Games board.
The event is the first planned of what is hoped to be many regular events leading up to the 2022 Gay Games. As the event grows, the diversity of topics will expand and the organizers hope to cover a wide range of different themes and issues.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, March 21st from 7pm to 9m at WeWork – 30/F, LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Lan Kwai Fong, Central. Admission is free with snacks and drinks provided!
