January 3-5, 2020 the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) hosted 45 of the best female athletes in the GLTA who came together to take part in the first ever GLTA Women’s World Tour Championship.
The event was the culmination of all GLTA tournaments from November 1st, 2018 until October 31st, 2019 in which the top eight players of each division (Open, A, B, C and D singles and doubles) were selected and invited to play in a face off tournament for a champion title.
The event was hosted in Amstelveen, Netherlands and is considered “invitation only” which means that participants must qualify by participating in regular GLTA sanctioned tournaments for which they earn points based on their performance. The top eight ranked players in each of the divisions who qualified during the season were invited to participate in the World Championships.
Each year, the World Championships is hosted in a different location, with rotation between North America, Europe and Asia/Australia. This year’s Women’s World Championships had an amazing atmosphere and sportsmanship that helped make the event a resounding success.
