Soccer star Lionel Messi undergoes minor surgical procedure for kidney stones

Lionel Messi, the Argentinean soccer star of the FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team underwent tests on Monday and on Tuesday had a minor procedure to treat kidney stones at the Dexeus university hospital in Barcelona. He received shock wave lithotripsy which is a non-invasive treatment that breaks the stones up into tiny pieces.

In spite of this, Barcelona coach Luis Enrique hasn’t ruled Messi out of the Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semi-final in Valencia. If everything goes as expected, it’s possible he will be back in training on Thursday.

This past December Messi missed the Club World Cup semifinal in Japan due to renal colic, an abdominal problem that’s often related to the presence of kidney stones in the renal ducts.
