Decorated MLB umpire comes out

As first reported by Outsports, long-time MLB umpire Dale Scott has come out as gay in a subtle but public way. A photo of Scott and his husband Michael Rausch was published in Referee Magazine in October just before the World Series. Scott explained to Outsports that he chose the picture to be published, and that he wasn’t pressured in any manner to come out.

In a move that was surely inspired by recently-declared MLB ambassador of inclusion Billy Bean, Scott will begin his 30th season as an umpire in the coming spring. As one of the most highly lauded (three world series an three all-star games) umpires in the game, Scott will begin a journey as the very first official in one of the Big 4 sporting leagues in the United States to publicly declare his sexuality.
